His professional credits include publication in highly respected art books and magazines – the Artist Magazine, Watercolor Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Drawing Magazine; “Splash”, “The Transparent Watercolor World”, and more.  A popular workshop instructor and juror, Dale has traveled and taught widely in the US and abroad. On a personal level, Dale is warm and approachable with a delightfully dry sense of humor.

In addition to the juried show, NVAL is proud to bring to NorCal the Dale Laitinen Workshop, “Shape-Shifting:  Abstracting The Landscape” October 2 – 4.  Treat yourself to three energizing days with Dale Laitinen, master landscape artist. For more information, see the Workshop Description at NVAL.org.

The decision of the juror is final. Awards will be presented at the reception on Friday, October 4, 5 to 7 pm.  Award presentation is at 6 pm.

AGREEMENT:  All reasonable care will be taken with the art work, however, the following policies apply.

  1. The North Valley Art League shall not be responsible for, and assumes no Liability arising from fire, theft, damage or loss to artist’s property, including without limitation, the displayed artwork or any other items. Artist hereby releases and discharges the North Valley Art League from all claims and demands by artists for loss of or damage to artist’s property.
  2. The artist further agrees that the North Valley Art League may use digital images of the artist’s original artwork for promotion of the art exhibit and the North Valley Art League.

SALES:  California sales tax is collected by NVAL on all art work sold. NVAL retains a 20 percent commission on all sales. Paintings must remain in the Gallery for the entire show.

DELIVER WORK TO:  NVAL Carter House Gallery, 48 Quartz Hill Road, Redding, CA 96003.

GALLERY HOURS:  11 am to 4 pm, Wednesday through Saturday.

Entry Labels are included in the printed Prospectus (last page).  Copies area also available at  NVAL Carter House Gallery and will be available when you bring your work in.

If your image is LESS than 800 pixels on the longest side, you may want to resize it.  If you do not have a larger file, do not try to upsize your image.  You are better off submitting an image as small as 600 pixels on the longest side, rather than to distort the quality of the image by trying to increase the pixel dimension.

JUROR:   Jody Miller

NVAL is pleased to have Jody Miller as our juror this year.  In her own words:

I have been a photographer for most of my life. I’ve been making images since I was nine years old, but my real education started in 1982 when I attended the Ansel Adams workshop in Carmel, California. I’ve been making fine art images non-stop since then.

I spent 40 years as a designer / animator for the television industry in Hollywood, so my profession melded beautifully with my favorite pastime. I now live in Astoria, Oregon, and love the ever-changing light that makes this area so magical.

My body of work has been evolving for over 40 years and has come to fruition in this portfolio of images I share on my webpage – https://www.jodymillerphoto.com/.  I am represented by LightBox Photographic Gallery in Astoria, Oregon.

NVAL 2023 North State Juried Painting Show – Awards

Juror: David Lobenberg

Gallery Show May 3 to June 3, 2023

David Lobenberg is well-known for his portraiture work in the “California Vibe” style. His high level of excellence in figurative/landscape watercolor and acrylic painting is well-recognized by artists and collectors nationwide. He has a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from UCLA and is an adjunct art professor at Sacramento City College. You may see his work at: David Lobenberg Fine Art

JUROR’S STATEMENT:

“When I judge 2-D art, the first thing I look for is a competent use of whatever medium(s) the artist is working with.  After that, I look for the usual suspects – strong composition and unity, value and color use, any emotional or story-telling content, and visual invention and flair.

So, with that said, here was what I was not prepared for when judging this exhibit:  The overall high level of artistic competency and energy!

This 2023 North Valley Art League exhibit is a testimony to the thriving art scene here in Redding.  Thank you so much for inviting me to judge it!”

NVAL 2020-21 Regional Juried Photography Show Awards

Juror Jon Lynn McCallum’s Statement

Judging artwork is a curious endeavor. It is highly subjective—one may simply “like” one image over another without being able to describe the reasons why. Effective images often carry an unspeakable magic that defies the language of words. However, there are also certain factors that can be observed and scrutinized. Sometimes strong works are supported by these factors and sometimes they defy them.

Some of the factors in photography include:

  • The composition, or formal arrangement, of the Elements of Art (line, shape, texture, color, etc.) through the Principles of Design (unity and variety, balance, rhythm, directional forces, etc.).
  • The subject matter and its underlying message or meaning.
  • The emotional and psychological effect of the work.
  • The particular moment(s) in time.
  • The technical handling of the camera and image-editing tools.
  • The quality of the final print—how the chosen materials and processes affect and support the nature of the work.

If an image rates higher in these factors than others, it becomes a “better” image. However, the weight of each factor is another question. Is a strong composition as important as emotional or psychological impact? Is a certain subject captured at a certain moment as significant as the quality of the print? And so on. Judging thus quickly shifts from an “I like it” kind of activity to something vastly complex. Even once the selection is narrowed down to the prizewinners, the venture is puzzling. One image is seen as “better” for one reason, but another image is seen as “better” for another reason, and yet another image is “better” because of something altogether different. At some point, intellectual reasoning is no longer of service and becomes replaced by an instinctual knowing. Art, after all, has a logic all its own. Who is really fit to judge it?

Eighteen months have passed since I first saw the images online and selected the top thirty percent for this exhibition. I did not see them again until they were printed, framed, and hanging on the gallery walls. My first impression when entering the gallery was—“Wow! They all look so good!” I felt much excitement in being able to see them in person. All of these images are interesting and good for various reasons. I appreciate each of the many photographers and artists who engaged in their creativity, time, and energy to bring their work to this point and share it with us. And thanks to those who handled the many details of installing and hosting this exhibition. I am grateful for this opportunity to play “judge.” Thank you!

NVAL is pleased to have Jon McCallum as our juror for this show.

Jon Lynn McCallum is an artist based in Northern California, having studied art at College of the Redwoods, Humboldt State University, and California State University, Chico, where he achieved an MFA degree in Fine Art Photography. Since his education, McCallum has been teaching at Shasta College in Redding, CA, with courses including graphic design, digital art, and art history.

Highlights of his artistic history include attending workshops led by Holly Roberts, Dan Estabrook, and John Sexton, having some of his images chosen for exhibition by the renowned alternative-process photographer Christopher James, and exhibiting artworks at JayJay Gallery in Sacramento, CA.

Much of his photography has featured a human figure covered by a sheet as a way of denying the camera’s (and our culture’s) insistence on outward appearances. With the figure “taking cover” through various scenes, attention to the internal, intangible stuff of human being is emphasized. McCallum has long been thankful for art’s ability to get under the surface of things and affirm the human spirit, even though, ironically, art itself is a kind of surface.

JUROR:  SUSAN GREAVES

Susan F. Greaves is a Louisiana native and believes her earliest art influence was the graceful and classic architecture favored there. After receiving her bachelor of arts degree from Louisiana State University in interior design, she worked in New Orleans and then moved to Florida, Maine, Bermuda, Sicily, and Washington state with her family.

Meanwhile, she painted independently and took every history of art course available to her. In 1976, she began to study under the instruction of William F. Reese. His unwavering dedication to the foundational concepts of painting and to integrity set the direction and standard for her subsequent work. After moving to Redding, California in 1977, she studied with the acclaimed Sergei Bongart in Idaho and Los Angeles as a scholarship student. Through him, the influence of the Russian Impressionists is evident in her work.

Greaves’ work is described as “a fine example of strong, painterly style”. Her paintings are noted for their light and color. She uses classical methods of careful observation and direct execution to portray subjects ranging from florals and still life to landscapes and figures.

Susan has received over 50 awards, appeared in numerous publications and  is a member of  multiple prestigious Professional Honor Societies including Alla Prima International, Signature Member, Society of Master Impressionists, Charter Member and Plein Air Painters Northwest Society, Master Signature Member.

SELECTION & AWARDS PROCEDURE

The juror will select art work for the show from the entries submitted. Artists will receive notification by EMAIL of selected and/or not selected entries. Awards are given at the juror’s discretion. The decision of the juror is final. Awards will be presented at the reception on Friday, March 6, 5 to 7 pm.  Award presentation is at 6pm.

AGREEMENT

All reasonable care will be taken with the art work. However, North Valley Art League will not be responsible for loss or damage.

Submittal of entry constitutes an agreement on the part of the entrant to the terms and conditions of this prospectus.

SALES

California sales tax is collected by NVAL on all art work sold.  NVAL retains a 20 percent commission on all sales. Paintings must remain in the Gallery for the entire show.

FRAMING & HANGING REQUIREMENTS

Maximum size 40″ including frame, maximum weight 12 pounds.  Entries must be framed or be finished 1.5 – 2 inch deep gallery wrapped canvases.    All paintings must be ready to hang.  Framing must be substantial and up to typical gallery standards (no poster frames).

Frames need to be properly fitted with D-rings or split rings that fit our hanging system (½ inch to ¾ inch).  Eye hooks are NOT acceptable.   D-rings can be purchased at NVAL -2 for $1.  They are also available at hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowe’s etc.  Please do not use hanging hardware centered on the top of the frame to hang your work.  The piece will be unstable when hung.  For most pieces, place D-rings 2” from top of the frame to prevent the frame from leaning away from the wall at the top.  With large pieces 3” from the top works well.
