ANNE’S ARTISTIC STYLE AND INTENT
“The feeling of painting is like the first wind catching the sail of my boat and in this very instance of the wind – or the brush – the day has instantly changed and the wind is at my back.” Anne Leveque
Huge abstract landscapes and non-objective work are Anne Leveque’s spatial inspirations for oil on canvas. Her long view / aim is to push through abstract landscapes towards non-objective work, the goal being absolutely the obliteration of all images as they might creep in as Leveque paints. If she can do this it frees the viewer to “see what they see.” Throughout the process of up to 30 layers, Leveque is ever-mindful of leaving no recognizable imposed image.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop will focus on questions you may have about both technical and aesthetic aspects of painting layered abstracts. There will be an initial question and answer discussion, followed up by an interactive demonstration designed to deepen our understanding through shared exploration.
Participants can present specific problems they may be having, either technical or aesthetic. For example, Anne can address how to erase portions of a painting or how to start over, overlay, cut, turn, etc. by demonstrating these techniques. If you wish, Anne could take one of your paintings and “revise” it as a demonstration. You may even paint on one of Anne’s canvases as part of the interactive process.
Finally, you will discuss with Anne how to know when a painting is “finished.” Recognizing when to stop is itself a vital part of the ongoing dialogue between question and answer. As Picasso said, “To finish a painting is to kill it.”
