This show is open to all photographers residing in Northern California and Southern Oregon as follows:
All forms of photographic expression are encouraged – film and digital capture, both traditional and digital darkroom, along with photo manipulation. All entries must be the entrant’s original work, i.e. the capture of the image as well as dark room and digital processing. This does not preclude the use of professional labs for printing, resizing, and film development.
Images previously accepted into a NVAL Juried Photography Show are not eligible – with the exception of images accepted into a NVAL International Juried Photography Show as a Silver Selection.
Our purpose is to professionally exhibit your unique artwork in our gallery for patrons to view, appreciate and purchase. Approximately 80 images will be exhibited at our spacious Carter House Gallery and also on the NVAL website. The gallery is located in Caldwell Park, 48 Quartz Hill Road, Redding, CA 96003.
The North Valley Art League is a non-profit, all volunteer organization. Your entry fees cover the prize money and other expenses of running the photography show. Any remaining monies help fund the operating expenses of the NVAL Carter House Gallery so that we can continue our goal of furthering the visual arts in the Northern California region.
NVAL is pleased to have Roman Loranc as our juror this year. In his own words:
“I am a full-time traditional black and white photographer, and practice the methods used by Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Morley Baer and others in the ƒ-64 school of photography. My subjects include landscape, architecture and occasionally people as they are in their environment. I started photographing when I was 8-years-old, when I was given a small 35mm camera. I was immediately drawn to the magic of photography with that gift. But I wasn’t satisfied with the quality of the images, so I switched to large format. But I could not access large sheets of film, so I made my own glass negatives.
I still have these negatives.
I soon came to feel a fascination with the chemical photographic process which after exposure to light and immersion in developer, allows grains of silver to form first on the negative, and then again on a final print. It is pure alchemy to me and it is fun. I am inspired by beautiful paintings and my first inspiration as a visual artist came from the paintings of Chelmonski, Stanislawski, Paniewiz and Zaleski. Early on I was also inspired by the work of Jan Bulhak, and Roman Vishniac.”
Mr. Loranc’s hand-prints all his photographs and his works can be found in several galleries and museums in the United States, France, and Asia. In California, he is represented at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite, the Photography West Gallery in Carmel, the Duncan Miller Gallery in Santa Monica, and the Susan Spiritus Gallery in Irvine. In northern California, his prints can be found at The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. He also has authored several books of his photography. Please visit his website to learn more – www.romanloranc.com.
Everyone who enters will receive an email notification regarding acceptance or non-acceptance by March 21, 2019. Detailed instructions for delivery, shipping, and artwork identification will be provided in the acceptance notice.
$15 to rent one of NVAL’s frames and have NVAL frame your work.
All accepted images submitted for exhibition must be printed and framed either professionally or in a professional manner. Simple dark framing with white or off-white matting is recommended. Works must be delivered ready to hang. Maximum frame dimension is 40” and maximum weight is 12 pounds. NVAL hangs with cable hooks, so please use only frame hangers, D-rings or split rings for your hanging hardware.
If framed work does not substantially meet the appearance of the JPEG entry, or if the print quality, matting or framing are not suitable quality for gallery presentation, the NVAL may ask the artist to replace whichever element is not suitable. If the artist is unwilling to meet these standards, the NVAL reserves the right to replace the entry with another work selected by the juror.

Juror James Gilmore’s Statement
I had a wonderful experience spending time with the photographs submitted for the North Valley Art League’s 2018 Regional Juried Photography Show. It was a complicated process to select a cohesive show of ninety or so images that reflect the excellence of the medium’s ever-changing ability to render the visions of its practitioners, who felt strongly enough about their commitment to our medium to make the brave effort to submit their work!
My initial baseline for judging the images was two-fold. First, a demonstration of confident technical proficiency on the part of the artist – no matter what the approach. I then looked for ideas, a personal or unique vision and sensibility; evidence that the artist was in control.
That said, I was definitely biased toward imagery that was both challenging and original – images that clearly differentiated between the camera’s ability to simply ‘record’, and the artist’s ability to understand photography’s unique ability to transform the three dimensional world into a clear intention on a two-dimensional surface – the photographic print, in all its various contemporary forms.
We are in an interesting time for our medium. Photography is evolving into something entirely new. Like most juried exhibitions, this selection of work is only a representation of my personal preferences on the given days of looking at the submissions. As previously stated, I look for technical competence, a signature style, a developed articulate vision…most of all, if the image captures my attention and retains my interest for more than a couple of minutes. My preference is not a final statement on the merits and artistic qualities of the images submitted.
Thank you to everybody for submitting such outstanding imagery, and congratulations to those who were selected for this exhibition. Finally, thanks to the North Valley Art League for the opportunity to jury such a great collection of work, and to Bonnie Lampley for her assistance in the process. I am quite happy with this show.
