Juror’s Statement
Over the many years that I have been involved in the visual arts I have been asked to work in the capacity of exhibition manager, designer, curator, preparator, juror, educator, docent, and fund raiser. It sounds like a lot of hats to wear but, in reality, this kind of dedication and involvement by many community members is the foundation of our visual arts and performing programs today. This is also true with the North Valley Art League. The Carter House building which currently houses the NVAL has played an important part in bringing art exhibitions and programs to the north state. Over the years this building has held The Redding Museum and Art Center, Carter House Science Museum and currently the NVAL. There is something special about this facility and the arts that this place has inspired.
In an open competition like this one, there is always a great variety of works. Some more skillful, while others seem less technically accomplished but have a strong visual expression, sense of emotion, message, or even humor. Something I have struggled to capture in my own work. So, when selecting an exhibition, like this one, I first try and let the artwork speak to me. Does the work have emphasis? Does it hold my attention? As I spend time with the work, be it representational or nonrepresentational, does it hold up over time. By this point I am wanting to see an overall sense of continuity. Finally, what I consider to be the most difficult part, choosing the art work that will receive the limited number of awards.
